There's a whole new lineup of sustainability events this week, ranging from environmental studies students presenting their green projects to marine conservation. Some of the week's highlights are listed below, and you can find out even more items happening on campus with our full Sustainability events calendar, which is the best place to find the most up-to-date listings and details on all events. This Wednesday, I will be attending the Environmental Studies Capstone Symposium. Students will be presenting their Capstone projects from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Expect to find a detailed overview and pictures of some of the most visual and excited student green projects later this week on our blog. Twice a year, at the end of autumn and spring quarter, Environmental studies majors present their short oral presentations followed by a Q&A or create a poster and answer questions. Everyone is invited to attend and learn more about the work Environmental Studies majors are doing. The oral presentations will take place in Alder Hall Auditorium and the poster presentation will be in Environmental Studies Commons in Wallace Hall.
Monday:
From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., UW Tacoma is holding its Environmental seminar series on the Hazardous Northwest. Evan Soloman from the UW School of Oceanography will be evaluating the Cascadia gas hydrate reservoir and contemporary ocean warming. The seminar series is open to the public and will be held in UW Tacoma Science Building 309.
Tuesday:
Patrick Christie from the UW School of Marine and Environmental Policy will explore why marine reserves fail and the implications for Marine conservation and fisheries management. The lecture is at 10:30 a.m. in Fishery Sciences 102.
The UW Farm is also hosting its regular volunteer hours four days this week, beginning today! All the UW Farm volunteer times and locations are listed below:
- Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mercer Court
- Wednesday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Center for Urban Horticulture
- Friday from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Center for Urban Horticulture
- Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Mercer Court

In need of furniture, electronics, and other cool stuff for a reasonable price? The UW Surplus Store takes in items from all UW departments and medical facilities and sells them to the general public for a small fee. They are open every Tuesday, from noon to 6 p.m.
Also, UW EcoReps is sponsoring its weekly Green Greek Representative meeting at Sigma Kappa House from 6 to 7 p.m. They will be discussing ways to implement green change in the Greek system and how to get every chapter involved.
Wednesday:
At 3:30 p.m., Kathy Wolf from the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences will explore nature, health and ecosystems, and sustainability. Her lecture is part of the Spring 2016 SEFS Seminar Series. It's open to the public and is held in Anderson Hall 223.
EcoReps will be hosting its weekly meeting to discuss upcoming green projects and work towards implementing them. All students are welcome to join. The meeting will be held in Smith Hall 311 at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday:
Traveling from University of California Davis, Marissa Basket will discuss how climate change affects coral reefs and how to combat it. Better understanding coral reefs will help individual species that are particularly vulnerable to climate change. The lecture will be held at 4 p.m. in Fishery Sciences 102.
