And just like that...we're almost halfway into winter quarter! If you haven't already, check out the sustainabilty events calendar, which is full of lectures, student organization meetings, volunteer opportunities and more. We've listed a few of the top options this week below, and you can always check out our calendar for a comprehensive listing of events. In the dead heat of summer, Natalie Pearlman, a UW senior studying molecular biology, found herself standing along the Missouri River surrounded by buffalo and fireflies. She watched as the sun slowly dipped below the wildflowers and distant rolling hills, the deep pink sunburn and itchy bug bites that covered her body quickly fading from her mind. Sitting beside her were five other college students and two professors who were all from various universities across the U.S.

The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at The University of Washington (DDCSP@UW is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 cohort. Freshmen and sophomores with a passion for conservation and environmental justice are encouraged to apply by February 5, 2018.

UW Sustainability offers a quarterly undergraduate seminar series through First Year Programs that gives students the opportunity to explore sustainability at UW and beyond. The fall quarter seminar explores sustainability efforts across UW and resources on campus such as the UW Sustainability campus map, UW Recycling programs, and the student-administered Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF).

The one-credit course is listed as GEN ST 297-V and meets Fridays at 2:30 p.m.

There is still space available to register for a studio course which gives you a chance to work on creating video games about earth science. 

EarthGames is a community of researchers, game developers and students who share a passion for games and the environment. They adapt the latest scientific research to develop amazing video and board games to teach and inspire players about the natural world and our role within it. This fall, you can help and earn credit through ATMS 495, a studio course open to all majors. The course meets Mondays at 1:30-3:20 p.m.

Students who are in the UW Greek system and have an interest in Environmental Leadership or Sustainability Consulting can earn course credit through the Green Greeks Representative program and Environmental Studies this fall.

For the first time, this year Green Greek Representative program is an accredited 1-2 credit course. Students will represent their chapter and work on environmental projects while gaining leadership experience and learning about sustainability solutions.

UW Civil & Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Amy Kim is offering a new graduate-level special topics course this fall. The course, "Sustainable and healthy building in global context," will discuss how to align building sustainability strategies to promote occupant health. More specifically, students will identify building components that affect occupants’ comfort, health, well-being, and productivity.

The UW Tacoma Center for Leadership & Social Responsibility is offering a 10-week online Certificate in Business Sustainability course this fall.

Students interested in learning about bees, beekpeeping and pollination have an opportunity to take a summer course covering basic modern beekeeping skills. If you are interested in food production, farming, holistic gardening, botany, entomology, pollination, or are just curious about bees, this course will provide a deep knowledge base. Your participation will be part internship and part science project, so be prepared to don your suit, grab your notebook, and have fun. Who knows - you may become a beekeeper!

Students interested in creating solutions to environmental problems can register for the Environmental Innovation Practicum. The weekly seminar will help students create project-based solutions while receiving coaching by environmental professionals or entrepreneurs.
