UW Sustainability will hold Green Certification workshops the first Wednesday of each month, starting June 7th at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to join to learn more about our Green Office and Green Laboratory certification programs - we'll have a brief presentation, answer questions about the certification application, walk through available resources to help make your workplace more sustainable, and provide support for filling out the application.
UW Recycling and UW Sustainability’s pilot program to recycle lab glove diverted an impressive amount of material from the landfill!
Two waste audits were conducted to compare how much gloves will be diverted from landfills - one before the pilot began and one after. The waste audit prior to the glove recycling program demonstrated that 23% of the lab waste sent to the landfill were gloves - more than any other item. By the end of the quarter, only 7% of material sent to the landfill were gloves - an impressive change!
For the first time, UW labs have been recycling used nitrile gloves as part of a pilot program between UW Sustainability and UW Recycling that started in Spring quarter. Nitrile gloves are significant source of waste in thousands of campus labs. A waste audit prior to the start of the pilot program demonstrated that nitrile gloves make up 23% of lab waste by weight that is sent to a landfill - more than any other single item.
There are many Green Laboratories at the University of Washington who practice sustainabliity every day. The Green Lab Certification program was created to recognize these labs, while providing resources for labs who want to improve their practices. This spring, the Green Lab program gave awards to those certified labs which showed outstanding performance even among the select group of certified Green Labs.
Shout out to Schindler-Limnology Lab, Berg Lab, Shendure Lab, Keil Lab, and Olmstead Lab for becoming our newest certified Green Labs!
The Schindler-Limnology Lab placed at the Gold level of certification, scoring highest in the communication and education category. With about six staff and graduate students, the lab does research on water quality, fish biology, nutrient cycling, and all things inland water.
UW Organizational Excellence is hosting a Showcase on March 8 from 1-3 p.m. in the HUB Lyceum, featuring work from departments across the UW. This event will showcase how schools, colleges, and administrative units are making the UW better – together. UW Sustainability is excited to be there as a presenter and to see the outstanding work from other areas of the university.
The first rebates for labs which have purchased Stirling Ultra Low Freezers rebates have arrived.
Last week, I was part of UW Sustainability's team at the first UW Safety, Sustainability, and Preparedness Expo, letting UW community members know about our Green Certification prgrams for offices and labs on campus.
