Welcome to week three of Spring Quarter! Here is a list of some of the sustainability-related events happening around the UW this week. All of these events and more are listed on our Sustainability Events calendar, where you can find the full details for all events and any last-minute additions. Monday, April 13th

  • Come and join Michael Cenci the Deputy Chief, Enforcement, Washington Department of Fish and Wild life to learn if “Being a Force of Nature is Right for You” (Kane Hall 120, 3:30 p.m.)
  • The weekly meeting for the Campus Sustainability Fund, a completely student-funded and student-run group, is today. All of the CSF committee meetings are open to the public - come learn more about the projects and how the committee works. (HUB 307, 4:30 p.m.)
  • At the weekly SAFS Seminar series, Stephanie Green, an estuarine faculty search candidate, will be presenting on “Reassembly Coastal Marine Ecosystems: Patterns, Processes, and consequences” (Fishery Sciences 102, 4:30 p.m.)

Tuesday, April 14th

  • Surplus property from all UW departments & medical centers for sale to the public every Tuesday! (Plant Services Building, 4515 25th Ave NE 12 - 6 p.m.)
  • If you are interested in volunteering for the UW Farm, they have regular volunteer hours every week. Tuesday’s volunteer hours are at the Center for Urban Horticulture, 2:30 - 6 p.m.
  • Ever wanted to learn about crabbing in Washington? Now is your chance! Join the Recreational Fisheries: Science, Management, and Policy class and hear guest lecturer Clyde McBrayer, former Commissioner, Washington State Fish and Wildlife Commission talk about "Dungeness Crabbing in Washington: Tactics for 
Success and Prevention of Gear Loss" (Fishery Sciences 107, 5 p.m.)
  • Climate Change in Coastal Vietnam: Oceanography student Robin Banner will share how rising sea levels have altered the balance between the river and those who depend on it. Then at 7:30 Joseph Gaydos will talk about "Extraordinary Tales from the Salish Sea.” Tickets are $5 or free with UW ID (Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Avenue, 5:30 p.m.)
  • What is the best way to tackle environmental issues? The government or the free market?A panel of experts will debate the question. The debate is free for everyone to attend, but you must register online! (Kane 120, 7:00 p.m.)

Wednesday, April 15th

  • The Environmental Stewardship Committee provides recommendations for environmental policies at the University of Washington. The public is welcome to sit in on the meetings to hear the discussion on those policies and the progress towards meeting the goals of the UW Climate Action Plan. (Gerberding Hall 142, 10:00 a.m.)
  • UW Farm Volunteer hours (Mercer Court, 1:30 p.m.)
  • SEFS Spring 2015 Seminar Series. Come listen to Professor Kate Simonen of the UW Department of Architecture give a talk on "How green is a building? Using life-cycle assessment to quantify the environmental impact of construction" (Anderson 223, 3:30 p.m.)

Thursday, April 16th

  • UW Farm Volunteer hours (Botany Greenhouse, 8:30 a.m.)
  • Join the Recreational Fisheries class and hear guest lecturer Chris Donley the Inland Fish Program Manager from the WDFW to discover the “Management and Status of Inland Fisheries and Involving Youth in Recreational Fishing” (Fishery Sciences 102, 10:30 a.m.)
  • Nosh on Nature: Real Food Really Matters: Come together to discuss how your student voice can support environmentally conscious eating. Plus, Bay Laurel Catering will be providing real food samples. (Wallace Hall 012, 11:30 a.m.)
  • Come by the Campus Sustainability Fund table in Suzzallo Cafe for their drop-in office hours! (12 -1 p.m.)

* Don’t miss the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences spring potluck! The SEFS spring gathering is for alumni, students, staff, faculty and friends of the program will be a potluck-style barbecue in the Washington Park Arboretum. (Graham Visitor Center, UW Arboretum 4 - 7 p.m.)
