ENVIR 502: Business Strategy and the Natural Environment provides students an opportunity to explore the ideas of sustainable business. The course is open to Graduate Students and Undergraduate Juniors and Seniors from all majors with permission from the instructor. Email enviradv@uw.edu for permission.

The course will discuss the question: "How can a business be financially successful while lessening its impact on the environment and society?" Learn the essential functions for a business to achieve sustainability and analyze different challenges start-up firms and established companies have in seeking to reduce their footprint. Students will also get a primer on how businesses can achieve sustainability. Understand how companies establish a brand image, engage their employees and measure the impact of their operations.

In this course:

  • Compare start-up firms with a sustainability mission and established firms seeking to reduce their environmental impact.
  • Learn the essential functions for every business and emphasize how they are central to understanding and achieving business sustainability.
  • Understand how companies establish a brand image, motivate employees and measure the impact of their operations.
  • Design a research project focusing on a sustainable company/companies.
