ESS Associate Vice President Ruth Johnston was given the Professional Development Award by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) at their 2014 annual meeting in Seattle.

The award recognizes outstanding individual contributions to NACUBO professional development activities as well as the association's publication programs.

Johnston holds dual roles at UW, serving as the Associate Vice President responsible for the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability office and the UW’s Business Diversity Program, as well as Associate Vice Provost for Organizational Excellence. She has had a strong leadership role in sustainability at the university, including leading the establishment of the Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability office and coordinating the development of the university's Climate Action Plan.

She has served on the faculty of NACUBO's Student Financial Services Conference, including three years on the planning committee - two as chair. Johnston has presented at three of the last four NACUBO annual meetings, including this year, when she co-presented "Strengthening Leadership on Environmental Sustainability" with Campus Sustainability Fund Coordinator Graham Golbuff.

She is on the board for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainabilty in Higher Education (AASHE). Johnston is also active with the Washington Association of College and University Business Officers (WACUBO) and the Network for Change and Continuous Innovation (NCCI): Higher Education's Network for Change Leadership, and was a founding member of the Institute for Student Services Professionals. In Johnston's career at the UW, she has worked in Student Life, Continuing Education, Human Resources, Financial Management, Finance & Facilities, Office of the Provost, and Planning & Budgeting.
