The UW has become Seattle's largest buyer of green energy, Mayor Greg Nickels announced yesterday.

The UW, which recently joined Seattle City Light's Green Up program, now runs entirely on sources of renewable energy that emit no carbon into the atmosphere, said UW President Mark Emmert. These sources include hydropower, wind power and solar power, according to the Seattle City Light Web site.

"Today the UW has become our largest partner in the Green Up program," Nickels said. "The UW has taken a key step in its commitment to fight global climate change."

The University has also committed to construct all future buildings according to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, a set of nationwide sustainability standards, Emmert said.
