The University of Washington’s sustainability efforts rank in the top 10% of universities worldwide, according to a report by the Universitas Indonesia (UI). The UI Greenmetric report lists the UW as 28th out of the 301 universities from 61 countries that took part in the ranking.
The UI Greenmetric Ranking of World University compares universities’ efforts toward campus sustainability and environmentally-friendly university management. The initiative was launched in 2010 to compel university leaders and stakeholders to increase their focus on environmental sustainability, as well as economic and social aspects related to sustainability.
The 2013 ranking focused on six categories: Setting and Infrastructure (15%); Energy and Climate Change (21%); Waste Management (18%); Water Usage (10%); Transportation (18%); and Education (18%).
The UW consistently ranks among the top sustainability-minded schools in the United States. Most recently, the University was named to the Princeton Review’s Green Honor Roll and the Sierra Club’s “Greenest Colleges” list.
