The UW's Sustainability Action Plan calls for a 5% reduction in emissions from professional travel by 2025. Professional travel, particularly air travel, is a significant contributor to UW’s total greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve necessary reductions to meet our goal - as well as global targets to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius - it is essential that UW employees consider how to limit emissions from air travel.
We recognize that collaboration is a central activity of academic research, and UW faculty and staff travel for many reasons, including networking, researching, learning and reporting. While some air travel will remain necessary, the COVID-19 crisis has shown that videoconferencing technologies can provide connections without travel. In addition, there are other ways to reduce the impact of air travel on carbon emissions through smart traveling and carbon offset programs. We have compiled information on these practices below. Thank you for contributing to our shared sustainability goals!
