University of Washington

It's the middle of summer, the sun is shining, and you're likely outside enjoying it not thinking about what the end of September will bring. But as autumn quarter rapidly approaches, it's time to start thinking about what you need for your classes. Back-to-school shopping can be costly, and not just to your wallet. But, choosing planet-friendly supplies and furnishings has now been made a whole lot easier!

Our Pinterest board "Sustainable Shopping List" is a collection of sustainable school, office and dorm supplies. Some of them are to be expected, like recycled printer paper. But, I bet you didn't think about making a reusable grocery bag out of your old pillow cases!

The best part is you don't need to travel very far to buy most of these sustainable school supplies. The University Book Store compiled a handy list of all the sustainable products they offer. From notebooks to backpacks, they have nearly everything you need to start off school with a very minimal carbon footprint.

In addition to back-to-school shopping, this list is useful for UW faculty and staff who are looking for office supplies.

Fun Facts:
The biggest back-to-school expense is apparel and accessories. Save some cash by trading in your clothes and being thrifty.
